Should I get a leak shield for my Foreman? I have been doing some reading and many people have said that you can get water in the engine through the pull cord. What are the chances of that happening?

Well, my friends and I ride in water most of the times we go on rides and we never had any trouble with water gettin in. The main reason none of us have the leak sheild is because first it is $58 bucks and you cant use your pull start any more which IMO is a waste of money. Now I understand the people that all they do is go through water and mud but there has been cases where using my pull started saved me from a long walk back to the truck. Hope this helps, Ethan

yes it is worth it. i am having to put new engine rings and piston and pretty much a whole rebuild, they told me that water was the cause. they said that if i had gotten the leak shield before i went into water, my rancher wouldnt be into peices right now. when they rebuild it, i am going to get one put in even thought i never have used my pull start.

The leak shield is great. I've never used my pull rope and it was only good for 1 pull, maybe if your lucky. Honda could use some better engineering on this system for their bikes imo. Its not the water that damages the seal, its the sand and grit that is in the water and is always there if your mudding. The leak shield completely seals this off and keeps the engine seal dry and free of contaminants.Great idea imo. ;D

Your dealer might not know about them. It's definately NOT a Honda part. It also only comes from a few places, and if those aren't who your dealer deals with, they may never have heard of them. Also remember that the leak shield is definately NOT for people who ride the bike the way Honda intended it to be ridden. I'm sure that there's dealers out there who won't sell them, just becase the very act of selling you such a thing would be like condoning riding behaviors that are definately not good for the bike at all.

REGARDLESS WHERE OR WHO YOU BUY IT FROM MAC-SIM MAKES THE SHEILD (WWW.MACSIMGUARD.COM) MY2CENTS IT'S SIMPLE TO INSTALL AND IT'S FAIRLY CHEAP FOR WHAT IT PROTECTS.

Installation with the motor on the bike is not that difficult. It can be done, that's the way mine was done. I also know of 2 area dealerships that do sell and install these on new bikes.

Has anyone tried to seal the existing cover by removing the pull cord and sealing the unit. Just curious. Dealing with Marine Issues with my boat, I can't believe it would be that hard to seal up the unit once the pull chord is removed. Any Thoughts?

IF YOU DO MAKE SURE YOU SEAL THE DRAIN HOLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE RECOIL STARTER.
I WOULD SAY THAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART.
BUT WITH THE MACSIMS SHIELD YOU CAN SEE IF WATER IS IN THERE AND WITH SEALING THE STOCK PART YOU WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE TO TELL.

Yes, I removed the recoil spring and sealed up the cover. I pust RTV around the all around the edge, and filled the rope hole full. I purchased the leak shield from yasky, but since I did not have an impact wrench to remove the pulley, I could not install it, so I did the next best thing.
