Its interesting. When I went to put my shield on, along with the rest of my mods, I didnt have an impact, so we just removed the recoil system all together from the cover (it was rusted, and really didnt work anyway). We sealed the cover with RTV completely and put it back on the foreman. To my knowledge it hasnt leaked yet. Now, to answer your question, from what I have read about the leak shield, the best course of action would be to remove the gasket from the shield and put a heavy coat of silicon or other sealant in its place. Some people dont have a problem with theirs, others do.

thats probably what i am goin to end up doin. b/c if it wont hurt anything, then its worth trying. now all i have to do is find the time.

Be sure to only tighten it to the correct torq when putting it on. Most people over tighten it, causing it to crack.

Never had a bit of problems with the gaket installed ( maybe just lucky though )
