i have a rancher with mudlights and the right front axle is making this noise that sounds like it has sand in it but it doesnt, because ive checked for tears in the boots.
i need some help on this question. my fan doesnt work. the clear tube has a tear in it and i bought a new tube and but it on but it doesnt want to come on, what could be the problem.

The rough sounding noise is probably a bearing. If you tube was riped and you went in water you probably fried your fan motor. Putting a new tube wont fix it .

A fan from discount honda parts is about 180 dollers, I have bought one for a 450 before, and I think the rancher has the same fan? I have got them apart before and it does not take much water to cause rust inside one and stop one from turning. If you have a meeter you might check and see if it is receiving 12dc volts or take it out and hook it up to a 12 volt jump pack and see if it will try to run.

I dont know if it will cause engine dammage or not? I would think it would break the oil down a lot faster, due to the heat, as far as buying any wiring just for the fan, I think all you can get is the complete harness.

I recently got to great fans off ebay in perfect condition for my 450 ES, Yes one cost $5.00 and the other $4.50
Yup it was late at night and I was the only bidder on both
got lucky seeing they average for $180.
just an FYI

I don't know if you got the grinding sound taken care of yet, but one suggestion I have is to pull of the brake drum and look to see that you don't have dirt or rust in the drum.
I had a problem with mine and thought the bearings were going out. Turns out the brake breather line got cut and let water get in my drum and rusted the drum and the pads. Turned the drums, put new pads on, new breather line and problem solved.

I agree with these guys. "sandy" noises usually lead to a bearing. Jack it up and tug on the wheels, see if one (probably both) are loose, then poke around to see exactly what part is allowing the movement.
As for the fan, yes you can run an engine without one for testing purposes. Verify that the overheat light comes on when the key is first turned on. Let it idle, and it may take ten minutes or more, but don't go anywhere. The fan will (should) come on before the egine exceeds the normal operating range. The overheat light indicates that you are leaving the normal range, not that the engine is blown up. Use that as a gauge for when you need to turn the engine off. Again, look at the first sentence in this paragraph. For testing purposes. Do not take that to mean riding, working, or otherwise stressing the engine is allright without a properly working fan.

i figured out what was wrong with my fan. the fin was bent a little and it was stuck on the sidding that holds the fan in place. it works fine now.

Torn boots don't make noise. Not until theo joint inside of it fails. That makes a very pronounced "clicking" noise, definately not a sandy noise. You really should check the bearing. Take a look at this post: CLICKIt's a different bike, but the procedure is the same, both for checking and for replacing.

it could be my breaks cause i go into water alot and i never did have much of braking power. i took my boot and all my axle stuff and the axle looked fine the bearings were brand new. and i might have to check my brakes cause i never do look cause they always need to be replaced
