Ethan,
I recently became an AMSOIL dealer. Is that the brand your buddy bought? I can't imagine it is because a case of amsoil motor oil is much less than $120/case. If it is I can contact the technical dept of the company and see if this is a common problem. I haven't heard of it, but I can check if you want me to.
I can tell you this, synthetic oils do differ in smell from dyno oils. This is usually noticable during oil change and just after changing the oil. I can't say that I have noticed much of a difference in exhaust emission smell since changing to synthetic oil and can't , logically, think of any reason why it should.
Just out of curiosity, did your buddy stay with 10w40 or did he go with a different wieght oil? Amsoil's recommendation for ATV motor oil is a 0w40 synthetic oil they make, however, after doing some reseach I decided to stay with the 10w40 oil in my foreman as well as for my VTX 1300. Both bikes REALLY seem to like the syntethic oil.
Let me know if you want me to check with AMSOIL. And if you have any other questions check out my website below or give me a PM.

Ethan,
I'll check with the techinicians at Amsoil to see what, if anything, they might know about this. I'm on midnights right now so it may be a week or so before I get back with you, but I will report back one way or the other.

Ethan,
Wasn't able to find out any definitive explanation for you as far as a bad smell from the exhaust.
As I stated earlier, the synthetic oil does have a distinctively different smell than the dyno oils do. It would seem that because of the engine lubrication system in a 4-wheeler being basically a closed system he really shouldn't notice any difference in odor unless somehow oil is getting out of the engine.
Not sure I was much help for you on this one. Let me know if your friend or you has any questions about amsoil, or is interested in trying any amsoil products or just check out my website below.

Ethan, Check out my website for Amsoil attached to my signiture on the bottom of my post. All the pricing info is there. Company won't allow me to post price info in a thread. I'll PM you the pricing info. Here is a handy link to the amsoil website: www.amsoil.com/products.htmYou can go under the ATV section and find what you need. For my foreman 450s I use: AMF-01 case of 10W-40 synthetic motorcycle oil(12 qt) AGR-QT 75W-90 Gear Oil (1 Quart) for the front and rear differentials. I need to do some checking into this because I see that this product isn't listed on the website anymore. Recently they have revamp the website, but as of the last time I ordered this was available. I will try and find out tommorrow and post that info for you. From this link you can find out which oil filter/air filter, etc you will need for your bike. Don't be fool, oil filters are probably the most important part of your engine lubrication. When engines fail it is usually because of engine grim and dirt due to faulty filtration not engine oil breakdown. I don't remember how many oil changes I can get from a case of motor oil and the gear lube because I use these same lubricants in my motorcycle. If you can't find the info you need, or have any other questions about Amsoil products you can PM, or e-mail me and I will do my best to get you the info you are looking for as soon as possible. Ethan, Thanks for your interest. I don't think you'll be disappointed with Amsoil. I strongly believe it the product, that is the only reason I became a dealer. TRHOD

FYI: Amsoil has changed their designation of gear lube.
FGR gear oil is now replacing AGR. SVG gear oil is now replacing TGR. The SVG is a higher performance racing type oil. It is a little beefier lube than the FGR.
Either FGR or SVG can be use in the honda foreman 450s.

Didn't mean to cornfuse ya . In a post earlier I had told Ethan that the diffential fliud for the foreman from Amsoil had a product # AGR-QT. This product is no longer available and was replaced by a longer life gear oil with the product # FGR-QT. Amsoil used to make a racing gear oil in the 75W90 wieght that was designated TGR-QT. This was replaced with a better gear oil with the product # SVG-QT. I posted this because if you went to look at my Amsoil website for the AGR-QT product or the TGR-QT product you wouldn't be able to find them. www.synthetic-oil-tech.com/1246101/Hope this helps. By the way, can I get some maple syrup with the rabbitcake ;D ;D TRHOD

Hey TRHOD I finally purchased some AMSOIL!!! I got the gear oil for now and after i finish the Honda oil I'll get some of the 10W-40 AMSOIL. That 0W is too thin. And i was thinkin about gettin some grease too. My friends have had Bel-ray and i was wondering if you could get amsoil grease in the "tub" like container. That would be good cause im gettin HL bearings here pretty soon. The place i bought it from is about 1 mile down the road so im in good shape. They had a display there about amsoil, fram, and K&N and it showed K&N as the worst. I dont know though weve had good luck with K&N.I like the paper filter more than the foam. I'll let you know what i think. Thanx, Ethan
