Got a question. If you have a DGL, does it only work when the wheels are both straight, or should it work when they are turned?

The DGL is full time, straight or turning. As you turn the wheels, the design allows the outside tire to speeds up for easier turning.

Yes it should have been spinning. Was it freewheeling, or was it just spinning slower than the other tire? It should have not been freewheeling so to speak (like honda 3wd), but like DirtyForeman stated, the clutch design allows the outside wheel to spin faster than the other.

No it would not spin unless he rocked it for the wheel to catch

Sounds like he needs to tear it down before he does anymore damage. I think the repair clutch kit for the DGL is about 50 bucks.

Ok well the thing is there are decent mechanics and they installed it themselves and he says it mostly doesnt work unless the wheels are straight so do you think it is the clutch kit in the DGL?

Something is not right in there. When mine wore out (not the DGL's fault) it started acting like that. Delayed reaction sometimes, progressively to always, and when it was hooked up it was weak. When I got mine, it was all neatly tucked in together, supported by a rubber band. Being a little in a hurry, I just took my time not to disturb it. It went together well, but something wasn't right. The clutches cost around 50 bucks, give or take. When I put it all back I soaked all the clutches in gear oil (to prevent "dry" friction during initial riding, and made sure the clutches hadn't shifted out of place and all, and it's been flawless ever since. It actually tore up pretty fast the first time, and it's been several years this time with no signs of trouble.

My mistake was to assume that the directions were "overcautious", and the rubber band had everything together just as it should be. That wasn't the case. The clutches were not ordered correctly and one plate from one side was on the opposite side. (I got lucky there. That's the kind of mistake that can make differentials explode). Had I done like the directions said and stacked all the clutches correctly I'm quite sure that it would not have failed prematurely. I also think that pre-wetting the clutches is worth taking it all apart anyhow, however I can't really say how big or small the benefit is from that part.

Havent looked into it yet. We are too afraid to take it apart. Ill talk with him and see if he wants to give it another shot. Sounds like it would be the burnt out clutch though

Well its his not mine. And they had a hard time installing it themselves. They messed up the 1st time and now they are going to have to do it again. Not me thats afraid, just him.
